Does walking count as exercise?

Many people share with me that they go for walks for 'exercise.'

While walking is great and definitely much better than sitting on the couch, we need to include more than just walks in our exercise routine.

The reason for this, is because exercise needs to make you fitter and stronger. And that happens when you go outside of your comfort zone. You need to do something that is going to change your physiology. Most of us can walk anyway, so walking isn't going to do that.

What about more strenuous walking such as walking up stairs or hiking?

If your walk is more strenuous and gets your heart rate up, it can be a good cardio workout. However, to have well rounded fitness, you still need to incorporate strength training (lifting weights). Stair climbing or hiking will make your heart and lungs strong but it isn’t going to benefit your muscles as much as lifting weights will.

If you’re unsure on how to train effectively, investing in a good personal trainer will help. They will ensure you are exercising effectively and safely - because there’s nothing worse than wasting your time on useless exercise!

This doesn't mean that walking shouldn't be a part of your lifestyle. But if it is currently the only exercise you do, then you need to incorporate some strength training and some more challenging cardio.
